In stark contrast to the current political climate, the church is to be the shining example of unity.  It is this virtue, operating in love, that will draw people to us and our Lord.  As others are screaming their divisions and vitriol to one another due to differing opinions on worldly matters, may Jesus-followers reflect a brighter light of oneness, of togetherness.  Jesus both prayed for it and showed us how to do it.

Self-care is promoted to us at every angle.  Take care of yourself.  But Christians must be very careful with that.  Our greater call is to take care of others.  That can become wearisome at times.  So faithful believers protect that call on our lives, believing that a focused life of blessing others will eventually return to us.

Scriptures that predict end-times occurrences tell us that believers in Jesus will experience persecution and hardship.  If that is the case, it makes sense to practice our perseverance now when life gets hard!  One of the key strategies of Satan is to use life’s problems and stress to draw us away from God.  Our response to that must be a firm staying power in our faith.  It’s the very trait Jesus modeled for us.

Isn’t it interesting that in a foot race, particularly long ones, the person who takes the lead early on is seldom the eventual winner?  Ever wonder why?  Often it’s because they got too tired too early, or they couldn’t maintain pace at difficult segments of the race.  It’s the same thing when you live as a Christian.  You will get tired.  You will hit rough stretches.  But look around you – there are many examples of those who fought through those challenges and finished strong!

Has your faith ever seemed up and down to you?  One season you are on fire, and the next season you are disengaged?  That’s a spiritual battle we all face, but one we must all conquer.  The gift of our salvation in Jesus is so valuable that it demands our consistency.  Choose at the start of this New Year how you will remain grounded in your faith rather than erratic.

Matthew 2:1-12
As you give and receive this week, make sure you silently thank a band of astrologers from a very long time ago.  This whole thing was there idea!  But when those Magi laid those presents before the child Jesus, they were actually giving instruction to everyone in history who would choose to follow this new King.  What are you giving him this year?

Matthew 2:13-18
We are reminded daily during this holiday season that it is a time of joy and peace.  Although that sounds fantastic, it’s just not true.  Even in the early days of Jesus coming to the earth as a child, one of the most horrible things of all time occurred in the death of several children.  The Christian life is sometimes hard, very hard.  Scripture exhorts us to endure through it while promising the hope that God and His People will always prevail.

Luke 1:39-45; Matthew 1:3-13, 13-15
Although Jesus sometimes had thousands of people following him, he also had a few very intimate friendships.  One of those surely was John the Baptist.  Although related, they had a deep and lasting relationship.  Christians are privileged to share the same thing with those of like-faith.  The same experiences that Jesus and John shared are the same ones we are offered as well.
